What is Seafarer Certificates?
A seafarer medical is a mandatory health assessment needed for anyone employed on a sea-going vessel to confirm their fitness for duty and to ensure they do not have any conditions that might present a risk while at sea. In the UK, these assessments are supervised by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).
What are the types of Seafarer Certificates?
There are two types of Seafarer Certificates i.e. ENG1 and ML5 certificates.
- ENG 1: This is the standard certificate required for professional seafarers, which includes individuals working on merchant ships, superyachts, and large fishing vessels. It must be issued by a doctor approved by the MCA.
- ML5: This is a more straightforward assessment designed for those operating smaller commercial vessels (under 24m) that remain within 60 miles of a safe haven. Typically, this can be carried out by a regular GP or private provider. At the Driver Medical Test, we provide ML5 assessments. For booking, please call on 02038793833.
What to bring during the ML5 medical appointment?
You need to bring the followings during your appointment:
- ML5 Form (MSF 4112): Ensure it is printed and that your personal information is filled out (pages 1-2) using the GOV.UK form https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/ml5-medical-report-form-and-certificate-msf-4112.
- Photo ID: Acceptable forms include your passport, driving license, or Seaman's Discharge Book.
- Glasses or Contact Lenses: Remember to bring your glasses, even if you typically wear contact lenses. It is recommended to wear glasses to the appointment since you will need to take out your lenses for the eyesight examination.
- Medical History & Medication: Prepare a comprehensive list of all medications you are currently taking, along with the name, address, and phone number of your GP.
- Medical Records: Include any hospital reports or correspondence related to previous or ongoing health issues.
- Previous Certificate: If you are in the process of renewing, make sure to bring your last ML5 certificate.
What does ML5 medical involve?
The ML5 medical assessment typically includes the following elements:
- Review of Medical History
- Form Submission: The doctor will examine Part A of your ML5 form (MSF 4112), which you need to fill out in advance.
Discussion: You will talk about your previous medical issues, hospital stays, surgeries, and any medications you are currently taking.
Mental Health: A quick evaluation of your mental health to confirm your cognitive readiness for duty.
- Physical Assessment:
- Vital Signs: Your height, weight (BMI calculation), and blood pressure will be measured.
General Health: An examination of your heart (including heart rate and rhythm), lungs (breathing), and abdomen (to check for hernias).
Mobility & Strength: An evaluation of your musculoskeletal system to ensure you can perform physical tasks such as climbing or navigating tight spaces.
Neurological Assessment: A simple evaluation of your balance and coordination.
- Sensory Evaluations:
- Vision Test: Your eyesight will be assessed both with and without corrective lenses.
Color Vision: A test (often using Ishihara plates) to determine if you have color blindness, which is essential for lookout responsibilities.
Hearing Evaluation: A basic assessment to confirm that you can hear commands, alarms, and radio communications.
- Lab Tests & Additional Checks:
- Urine Analysis: You will provide a sample to test for blood sugar (diabetes screening) and kidney function. Please note: This is not a routine drug or alcohol test, although some employers might request those separately for an additional fee.
